Before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc with education nationwide, 57 percent of Latino high school graduates in Oregon pursued a college degree, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive, and that number had grown from 51 percent in 2011. But in recent years, far fewer Latinos are pursuing post-secondary education, with only 49 percent of the state’s 8,300 Latino graduates in 2021 going to college compared with 56 percent of graduates overall. While a quarter of the state’s K-12 students in 2022 were Latino, only 16 percent filled seats in colleges and universities. Advocates says returning to the positive upward trend will take concerted and intentional effort by educators.
