Portland’s hotel scene is struggling to find its footing after the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the notable casualties is the Society Hotel, an upscale establishment that has announced its closure this year. In contrast, nearby counties are seeing more success thanks to the influx of corporate and high-tech travelers. This year the Oregon State Legislature passed a hotel tax to pay for animal wildlife programs. Local tourism taxes on hotels are being implemented in other parts of Oregon. The rise of these taxes could jeopardize recovery efforts in those regions.
A recent report highlights the stark decline in hotel performance, with revenue per available room falling from $97 in 2019 to just $84 in 2025. Furthermore, Portland’s occupancy rate has plummeted to 61.8 percent in 2025, a significant drop from 71.5 percent in 2019. Many larger hotels in Portland are now facing foreclosure or being sold at prices well below market value, resulting in the city ranking among the bottom five out of 174 markets for recovery, according to a 2025 CoStar report.
